About dot grid paper
Dot grid paper rules the page with a regular array of dots instead of lines. Each dot sits where a grid intersection would be, giving you reference points for spacing, alignment, and proportion without dictating where words or shapes belong. The dots recede visually once you write over them, so the finished page looks intentional — not lined.
Why bullet journalers picked it up
Ryder Carroll's Bullet Journal method, published in 2013, treats a notebook as a mix of bulleted lists, calendars, trackers, and free-form notes — all on the same page. Lined paper makes calendars and trackers fiddly; graph paper makes prose feel cramped. Dot grid is the compromise: it scaffolds tables and habit trackers when you need them and disappears when you are writing sentences. Leuchtturm1917 standardised on 5 mm dot spacing in 2007 and that has become the de facto BuJo grid.
Beyond bullet journaling
Architects sketching to scale, knitters charting patterns, designers wireframing on paper, and engineers diagramming flows all reach for dot grid for the same reason — it gives you accuracy without imposing structure. If you use a fountain pen, dot grid paper also tends to look cleaner with washes of colour and ink than ruled paper does.
Printing accurately
The standard 5 mm dot spacing only stays 5 mm if your printer prints at 100% scale. In any PDF viewer, locate the option called Actual Size, 100%, or No Scalingand select it before printing. "Fit to Page" will distort the spacing by a few per cent in the wrong direction — usually shrinking it — and the result feels subtly off. Keep at least a 5 mm margin so the dots near the edge do not get clipped.
Picking a dot size
The default 0.45 mm diameter mimics what Leuchtturm1917 prints. If you are using broad fountain-pen nibs or watercolour, drop to 0.3 mm so the dots disappear under the ink. If you have older eyes or are printing on cheap paper that bleeds, push up to 0.6 mm so the grid is more legible.
Frequently asked questions
What dot spacing should I use for a bullet journal?
5 mm is the standard used by Leuchtturm1917 and most bullet journal notebooks, and it is the default here. 4 mm gives a denser, more flexible grid for small writing or detailed sketching; 6–7 mm is friendlier for larger handwriting and is sometimes called "loose bullet journal" spacing. Whatever you pick, write a couple of test lines in the spacing you have chosen before printing a whole stack.
How big should the dots be?
A diameter between 0.3 mm and 0.6 mm is the sweet spot — small enough that the dots disappear behind your writing, large enough that you can see them at a glance. Below 0.3 mm and the dots can vanish on some printers. Above 0.7 mm and the page starts to look spotty rather than scaffolded.
Is dot grid better than lined paper or graph paper?
It depends on what you are writing. Lined paper rules where each line goes; graph paper rules where everything goes. Dot grid suggests, without enforcing. That is why it has become popular with people who mix prose, lists, sketches, tables, and trackers on the same page: the dots align your work when you want them to and disappear when you do not.
Can I print dot grid on A5 for a Hobonichi-style notebook?
Yes — set the page size to A5 (148 × 210 mm) and the spacing to 3.7 mm to match a Hobonichi Techo, or 5 mm for a standard bullet-journal-sized A5. Make sure your printer is set to "Actual Size" so the spacing stays accurate.
